    Blastoise Analysis

Post by Immanent God LANCE on Tue 17 Jun - 6:26

Beeing gifted with a Mega-Evolution, Blastoise now is one of the pokes who define the new playstyle of this genereation; Bulky offence. With some nice defensive base stats of 79/120/115 in his evolved form, and a SpA stat of 135 further boosted by his Mega Launcher Ability, this guy is a tank. Beeing able to take a lot of hits, and retaliate back with some destructive power of his own. His fantastic ability makes him able to pick from many good moves, and in addition, this guy can provide Rapid Spin support. Not only providing Spin support, but unlike many other spinners, he beats most Spin Blockers 1 on 1, with his strong Dark Pulse. However, While Blastoise has a nice movepool and stats, he don't have a reliable recovery outside of Rest, which heavily reduces his longlivety in a match.

    Bulky Offensive Spinner

    Blastoise @ Blastoisinite
Ability: Rain Dish --> Mega Launcher
    EVs: 248 HP / 108 Def / 108 SAtk / 44 SDef
    Calm Nature
    IVs: 0 Atk
    - Water Pulse / Hydro Pump
    - Dark Pulse
    - Rapid Spin
    - Substitute / Rest / Haze

When Blastoise Mega Evolves, Water Pulse becomes just as powerful as Surf, but it has more PP and a added effect of a 20% chance of confusing your opponent. Hydro Pump can be used as STAB over Water Pulse in order to hit harder, but the accuracy drop is frustrating, and Water Pulse don't miss any important KO's to begin with. Dark Pulse is a really improtant move on this set, because it deals with all of the spinblockers (bar Sableye and Spiritomb) and the Psyschic types of the tier. Rapid Spin is a must to have control over the hazards in the game.

When using Sub, Blastoise can get past a lot of slow walls, that rely on Status and weak attacks. It can be used on a predicted Leech Seed from Trevenaut, or on the turn a Vaporeon goes for a Scald, or even on Aegislash when using King's Shield (Leftovers Shadow Sneak won't break the sub). Substitue makes him a threat, but it reduces his longlivety if used wrong, and Rest can be used over it, hopefully with team support of Heal Bell / Aromatherapy.

Other options which all can replace the 4th moveslot includ by others Haze, which single handly destroys Baton Pass teams and CM users, and immediatley gives you the upper hand. Then there's also covergae moves like Dragon Pulse, beeing boosted by his ability and also having a niche over Ice Beam to hit Charizard-X harder. And finally, Aura Sphere, which hits Ferrothorn, Kyurem-B, Lucario and Tyranitar harder.

The EV spread seems weird, so here's some quick notes on them. I wanted him to be able to hit just hard enough to KO certain ground- and ghost-types (see calc's below.) And then put the rest of his EV's evenly in his overall bulk. Since this is a mixed wall, I started with putting all of the EV's in HP, then I evened out his defenses. His SpD stat 1 point over the Def, to ensure that Genesect won't threaten with a +1 Thunderbolt. If you feel like you'd like Genesect and other Download abusers to get a SpA boost, simply put 4 EV's from his SpD to his Def.
When using Blastosie, you should almost always Mega-Evolve on the first turn you use him, if less you can abuse possible Rain from your oponent to your own advantage in some way, with his ablility Rain Dish.
