    Assault Vest (written by Piggeh)

Post by Immanent God LANCE on Mon 27 Oct - 11:49

So this new Item has come. Boosting the holder SpD stat by 50%, sounds really awesome, but then there is this side-effect. You cannot use status moves on that poke, kinda like a permanent Taunt to the holder. So is this Item viable?

Offensive moves with good side-effects come to mind.
Drain Punch, Giga Drain, Power-Up Punch, Charge Beam, Flame Charge, Dragon Tail, Circle Throw, Iron Head and Body Slam are good options.

    Some Abilities can also work:
Regenerator, Contrary, Toxic Heal, Water Absorb, Volt Absorb, etc.

By combining everything above, and some more, I've found some sets that can use this item:
(Have in mind that these set's were quickly made and can easily change EV spread and attacks and much more)

    Spoiler:
    Ho-Oh @ Assault Vest
    Ability: Regenerator
    EVs: 252 Atk / 248 HP / 4 Def or 224 SDef / 116 HP / 168 Atk /
    Adamant / Careful Nature
    - Sacred Fire
    - Brave Bird
    - Earthquake
    - Iron Head / Flame Charge

    +2 252+ SpA Xerneas Hidden Power Rock vs. +1 248 HP / 0 SpD Ho-Oh: 268-316 (64.57 - 76.14%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
    252 SpA Stone Plate Arceus-Rock Judgment (Rock) vs. +1 248 HP / 0 SpD Ho-Oh: 340-408 (81.92 - 98.31%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
    252+ SpA Kyogre Water Spout vs. +1 224 HP / 116+ SpD Ho-Oh in rain: 344-408 (84.1 - 99.75%) -- guaranteed 2HKO (different EV spread)

Despite all these impressive calc's, with AV equipped Ho-Oh loses one of his best ways of succseeding in the Ubers metagame, that beeing the power of Life Orb and Choice Band. Whit out them, he simply lack the power needed to stall break or sweep. He also loses the ability to Roost, Sleep Talk, use Tailwind support, Toxic or T-Wave.

I'm sad to say that He's not very viable as a AV user.

    Spoiler:
    Yveltal @ Assault Vest
    Ability: Dark Aura
    EVs: 252 SDef / 248 HP / 8 SAtk
    Sassy Nature
    - Oblivion Wing
    - Dark Pulse
    - Sucker Punch
    - Foul Play

    252 SpA Choice Specs Palkia Thunder vs. +1 248 HP / 252+ SpD Yveltal: 194-230 (42.63 - 50.54%) -- 1.17% chance to 2HKO
    252+ SpA Kyogre Water Spout vs. +1 248 HP / 252+ SpD Yveltal in rain: 438-516 (96.26 - 113.4%) -- 75% chance to OHKO

Equipped with a AV Yveltal becomes a monstrous special wall. Having the best offensive recovery move in his arsenal, He's got some good potential for this item. His triple STAB, Dark Aura boosted moves all hit really hard, even without investment. This tank can absorb many hits from a lot of things, heal a decent amount with Oblivion wing, and Sucker Punch, when they are in KO range. Sadly, Kyogre with Water Spout deals a lot of damage to this thing which makes him less viable.

    Is viable to some extent.

    Spoiler:
    Zekrom @ Assault Vest
    Ability: Teravolt
    EVs: 208 HP / 216 Atk / 20 SDef / 64 Spd
    Adamant Nature
    - Bolt Strike
    - Volt Switch
    - Outrage
    - Dragon Tail

    (Hack's suggested set)

Even though it can't take hits from specsogre well, it does check the more common scarfed variant, and unlike Palkia it can really just OHKO pretty much any Kyogre. Other things Zekrom has over Palkia is a strong move to OHKO Ho-oh with in sun, same goes for Lugia obviously. This makes Zekrom fit pretty well on teams that need a Kyogre check that pressures Ho-oh well. Zekrom also has that slow Volt Switch which can safely bring in mons like Mega Gengar on predicted switches or just after you have tanked a hit. Zekrom also scares Yveltal and CM Arceus way more than Palkia, which is cool. While Assault Vest Zekrom probably isn't the best set, it was still fun to use and it does have its niches. ~Hack

    Very viable.

    Spoiler:
    Amoonguss @ Assault Vest
    Ability: Regenerator
    EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SDef
    Calm Nature
    IVs: 2 Atk / 30 Def
    - Grass Knot
    - Clear Smog
    - Sludge Bomb / Hidden Power [Ice]
    - Foul Play

    (Hack's suggested set)

Good for stall or balance, checks the holy trinity of special attackers; Kyogre, Palkia (lacking Fire Blast in sun) and Xerneas (Lacking Psyshock). Amoonguss is hard to set up against with Foul Play and Clear Smog in its arsenal. The loss of Spore is a bit upsetting, but the new sleep mechanics makes it bearable to give up on that. ~Hack

Very viable in Ubers and below

    Spoiler:
    Palkia @ Assault Vest
    Ability: Pressure
    EVs: 248 SAtk / 252 Spd / 8 SDef
    Timid Nature
    IVs: 0 Atk
    - Spacial Rend
    - Fire Blast
    - Hydro Pump
    - Thunder

    (Lance's suggested set)

    252+ SpA Choice Specs Kyogre Thunder vs. +1 0 HP / 8 SpD Palkia: 136-160 (42.36 - 49.84%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Can repeatedly switch into Kyogre with little to fear and is able to 2HKO most variants of him. He outspeeds Xerneas and a lot of other dragons and if neccecary, can tank a Special Dragon move and retaliate back with his own. 8 SpD to always surviving 2 Thunders from Modest Specs Kyogre.

    Is very viable

    Spoiler:
Pursuit Trapper (Scizor) @ Assault Vest
    Ability: Technician
    EVs: 252 Atk / 248 SDef / 8 HP
    Careful Nature
    - Bullet Punch
    - Pursuit
    - Superpower
    - U-turn

    252 SpA Life Orb Alakazam Focus Blast vs. +1 8 HP / 248+ SpD Scizor: 97-116 (34.27 - 40.98%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

With the AV, he loses the ability to use Toxic, Defog, Roost and SD. Those losses are to drastic to make him viable in Ubers, but in OU, he's a really good Pursuit trapper. Now that the type charts has changed, Steel lost its Dark resistance, which means more pokes is Pursuit weak. When most Psychic types are special attackers, this guy really shines when dealing with them. Alakazam, Gengar, Latios, Starmie, Latias and Jirachi (lacking Fire Punch) could all become victims of this guys strong Pursuits.

    Viable in OU

    Spoiler:
The Annoyer (Swoobat) @ Assault Vest
    Ability: Klutz
    EVs: 248 HP / 4 Atk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
    Jolly Nature
    - Trick
    - U-turn
    - Knock Off
    - Thunder Wave

    A cute gimmick
Assault Vest + Klutz + Trick / Switcheroo = PermaTaunt

As "explained" above, this set ultilizes a cheap strategy, that can shut down every wall for the rest of the match. Klutz bypasses the effect of Assualt Vest, meaning he can Trick it someone who don't. Resulting in a permanent Taunt. U-Turn will give nive momentum to the the team and Thunder Wave is really good at crippling oponents pokes. Knock Off is something that must be used with cation, if you managa to knock off the Assault Vest, your strategy is ruined.

Is slightly viable in OU, but better off in the lower tiers.

Lopunny can do something similar, but is less effective, imo

    Spoiler:
Pure Evil (Jirachi) @ Assault Vest
    Ability: Serene Grace
    EVs: 252 Atk / 248 HP / 8 Def
    Adamant Nature
    - Body Slam
    - Iron Head
    - Fire Punch
    - Ice Punch

This thing is just evil. Spreading paralyzes and flinching foes to death, all whilst having a huge SpD boost. With Serene Grace his chances of Success is more than doubbled.

Very viable in OU, can be used in Ubers, too.

    Spoiler:
    Rotom-Wash @ Assault Vest
    Ability: Levitate
    EVs: 136 HP / 252 SAtk / 120 SDef
    Modest Nature
    - Hydro Pump
    - Thunder/Thunderbolt/Discharge
    - HP [Ice] / [Fire] / [Grass]
    - Volt Switch

    252+ SpA Mega-Gengar Sludge Bomb vs. +1 136 HP / 120 SpD Rotom-W: 111-132 (40.36 - 48%)
    252+ SpA Hydreigon Draco Meteor vs. +1 136 HP / 120 SpD Rotom-W: 138-163 (50.18 - 59.27%)

This poke has shown noteworthy viability in the OU tier. He's now the ability to tank the strong Special attacks in the tier. He will miss WoW, Pain Split and Rest, but he's actually doing pretty fine without it.

    Viable in OU

    Spoiler:
    Scrafty @ Assault Vest
    Ability: Intimidate
    EVs: 252 Atk / 248 HP / 8 Def
    Adamant Nature
    - Power-Up Punch
    - Crunch / Knock Off
    - Drain Punch
    - Ice Punch / Iron head / Poison Jab

Scrafty has Intimidate, and that paired with AV, a set-up move, and a draining move, give this poke a lot of set-up oppertunities. with access to the buffed Knock Off that now has 65 base power, he's not only a set-up sweeper, but an ammoyer to the oponents team. Sadly Fairy's are really tough for him, so Iron Head and Poison Jab is really helpfull. Or you could avoid the Fairy's all together and go with Ice Punch.

Viable in OU and in UU, if he'll still be UU that is.

    Spoiler:
    Tyranitar @ Assault Vest
    Ability: Sand Stream
    EVs: 252 Atk / 252 SDef / 4 SAtk
    Brave / Sassy Nature
    - Pursuit
    - Stone Edge
    - Fire Blast
    - Superpower / Ice Beam

    252+ SpA Mega-Gengar Focus Blast vs. +1 0 HP / 252 SpD Tyranitar in sand: 248-296 (72.51 - 86.54%)
    252+ SpA Mega-Alakazam Focus Blast vs. +1 0 HP / 252 SpD Tyranitar in sand: 252-300 (73.9 - 87.97%)
    252+ SpA Choice Specs Deoxys-A Focus Blast vs. +1 248 HP / 252+ SpD Tyranitar in sand: 356-420 (88.33 - 104.21%) -- 25% chance to OHKO*

This thing is a beast in sand, especially couppled with AV. Not a single poke in OU can OHKO him with a special move (not counting Keldeo's Secret Sword) in sand. He's a great Pursuit trapper, and Gengar and Alakazam Bait.

    *Different EV Spread

Very Viable in OU, not as viable in Ubers...

    Spoiler:
    Magnezone @ Assault Vest
    Ability: Magnet Pull

    - Volt Switch

    - Dragon Tail

I'll add more calc's, set's and poke's when I got more time. I'll also start analyzing each poke after a while, but that may take some time!
